Stephan Terblanche holds an LL.D degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa). His thesis was on the fine as a form of sentence. He started working at Unisa in 1992 after a career as magistrate. Sentencing is his main academic and research interest. Prof Terblanche is the author of the current standard textbook on sentencing in South Africa, viz. Guide to Sentencing in South Africa 2 ed (2007). He has published extensively on topics such as the current mandatory sentencing scheme in South Africa, the need for sentencing guidelines and, more recently, the sentencing provisions of the Child Justice Act, 2008. He has delivered many papers on these topics at international and local conferences. He is a rated researcher in terms of current South African practice.
