Ken studied at Leiden University and holds a Masters degree (2004) in Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures. In 2005 she first joined the Van Vollenhoven Institute as a research assistant and as a secretary to the INDIRA project. She later started her her PhD research which looks at two NHRIs in developing countries with a high degree of social and religious pluralism and a history of authoritarian government; Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia (Komnas HAM) in Indonesia and Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia (SUHAKAM) in Malaysia.
